Brasov and Transfagarasan 2024

Hiking

Cabana Malaiesti
Zărnești Canyon
  • Râșnov – Gura Glajariei – Cabana Mălaiesti. A rewarding steep climb up to Cabana Malaiesti. It took us about 2 hrs to walk up to the chalet and we were rewarded with beautiful views, refreshing drinks and a moment of peace and quiet.
  • Zărnești canyon – Zarnesti river cut a deep canyon (its walls are popular with rock climbers) and the gorge is now a perfect place for a family walk (the club is very gentle).

City highlights

Strada Sforii – Rope street
  • Rope Street, Brașov – a narrow street in Braşov, initially intended to provide firemen access (80m long and max 1.35m wide).
  • The Black Church: built by the local Transylvanian Saxon community in the Middle Ages, its construction was completed in the 15th century (just after 1476) in the late Gothic style.

Eating and drinking

Dei Frati – insalata esotica
Sub Tâmpa – salată de vinete
Prato: Frittura Mista
  • Prato – we were very impressed a few years ago so we returned to Prato with high expectations. Whilst it didn’t completely disappoint, we felt both service and food didn’t match our previous experience. Still really nice seafood though.
  • Juno wine garden https://www.facebook.com/junobrasov/- unlikely to win any awards for their food. You won’t come here for their pizza, but for the atmosphere and the focus on Romanian wines. We spotted this place on an evening walking tour ‘beyond the city walls’ and returned to check it out!
  • Sub Tâmpahttps://subtampa.com/ a very pleasant, informal terase serving traditional Romanian food with a modern (enough) twist.

Coffee

  • CH9 Speciality coffee în curtea Honterus by the back church
  • Shake Coffee Good old Shake Coffee, the perfect spot, tucked away from the main drag on a quiet street close to the centre https://www.facebook.com/ShakeCoffeeBrasov/ (our first find a few years back)
