Lunsford Farm, East Sussex 2025

Our second stay with Feathers Down Farms – we loved our Dorset stay for Father’s Day in June and decided to book again for an end of summer camping break. This time in East Sussex, just walking distance to Pett Level Beach.

Cozy camping view from Feathers Down Farms, overlooking the beautiful East Sussex coast and fields.

Fun things to do locally:

  • Walk around Rye, a charming medieval town with cobblestone narrow streets and crooked half timbered houses (especially mid week when it is nice and quiet).
  • Walk one of the Dungeness RSBP reserve trails. We did a short loop with the kids, miles of open shingle, freshwater pits, wet grassland and stunning wildflower meadows, great fun!
  • Play skipping stones on Dungeness Beach. A lot of fun!
Pett Level Beach – looking for dinosaur foot prints and the dunked petrified forest
  • Just walk from the farm to Pett Level beach (approx 15 mins walk). Pett Level is a small village on the coast between Hastings and Rye and it has a shingle beach, with some sand at low tide. At Cliff End, you can see the stumps of ancient trees that are part of a sunken forest dating back 6,500 years, when sea levels were much lower than they are today (we didn’t see the trees unfortunately, we didn’t quite make the 9am start at low tide).. This is thought to be one of the UK’s largest sunken forests, and would have formed a coastal woodland stretching from Rye Harbour to Bexhill. A little further on you can see fossils and dinosaur footprints, exposed by the crumbling cliffs.

EATING & Drinking

  • Obviously bbq at the farm, with such wonderful views, you have to cook on site!
  • Stop for a beer in the sun / wind / or inside the Two Sawyers nice pub stop in Pett village.
  • Have an ‘average’ lunch at Hoof in Rye (if everybody else’s kitchen is closed!) and enjoy a monster milkshake (Leon did!).
  • Enjoy some seafood at Dungeness Fish Hut: yummy crab wraps, lobster rolls and fresh fish with fried potatoes- on the beach, in the sun (and wind!) and surreal views of the power plant

  • And here is comes… The Seafood Bar at Rye Fish Market! The hidden gem this holiday and a nice way to end our break just before heading home. Good music (live from 5pm but we had to leave earlier), yummy seafood, friendly people and some unexpected sun shine. Super Frenchy fries!
