Dorset 2025

3rd year in a row now we went camping over the Father’s Day weekend. An established tradition by now, but given last year’s dramatic stormy weekend, I decided to upgrade ourselves to ‘glamping’.

Feather’s Down – Mount Pleasant Farm

STAY

Mount Pleasant Farm, Feather’s Down. Totally worth it! On a field, part of a working farm, we loved being in nature without compromising on comfort. Real beds, wood burning stove, hot shower and a flushing toilet – what else could we need?

EAT

Lore of the sky – we came here hungry and excited 😜 with our hopes up having read about its smoker, its owner and the amazing opportunity it brings! We left deflated, having had an average pub meal. Not even the beer was nice 😦

Better off making your own food vs local gastronomy

On our way back we stopped at The Newt in Somerset (we’ve been curious since we heard about it at Balylonstoren, its sister garden in South Africa). You do need to pay an annual membership fee to enter so not a cheap adventure, but a wonderful place to be, especially on a sunny day. We only tried their cider bar, but we will be back to try the other restaurants.

DO

  • On Saturday morning we joined the farm walk – with all Feather’s Down stays you get to learn about the farm you’re staying at so that was good fun and we learned a few things.
  • Walk up to Rawlsbury Camp and Iron Age Hill Fort. A steep walk up the hill (good exercise!) rewarded with beautiful views. Great that we could walk from our camp site, no need to drive.
